Common Plastic Types Used for Castors

The plastic material is classified as a thermosetting plastic raw material. The plastic castors, what we often refer to, are produced by plastic materials, which are relatively cheap to produce, but have a poor load capacity and poor wear resistance. And they are normally used in some light castors and small size castors.

Plastic castors have the advantages of light weight and sturdy, chemical corrosion resistance and easy to processing. They are cheap and can be mass-produced. Plastic is good insulator and synthetic polymer compounds, also known as polymers or macromolecules, and commonly known as resins, whose shape can be change easily. It is a material that is synthesized by synthesis or condensation reaction of monomer raw materials, and is composed of synthetic resins and additives such as fillers, plasticizers, stabilizers, lubricants, and pigments.

PP: Commonly known as polypropylene, used for five-star feet, armrests, foot pads and connectors with low strength requirements. PP castors are widely used in factory handling, warehousing and logistics, equipment manufacturing and other industries, and the use environment temperature is between -15~80 °C. Features: (1) Wear-resistant: rigid and tough, anti-fatigue, and stress-cracking resistant, and their performance is not affected by humidity; (2) Corrosion resistance: PP castors are resistant to oil, acid, alkali, and common acids. Organic solvents such as alkalis have little effect on it; (3) Environmental protection: PP is non-toxic and tasteless, belongs to environmental protection materials, and can be 


recycled; (4) Cheap: The price is relatively cheap. PP material is easy to burn and has a slight plastic smell. When PP is burning, the surface melts evenly and has a sticky filament.

ABS: Commonly known as engineering plastics, it can be used for connectors, seat backs, and seat panels. It is the main raw material for electroplating (water plating) in plastics. ABS is a general-purpose thermoplastic engineering plastic developed in the 1940s. It is a plastic variety with excellent comprehensive mechanical performance. It not only has good rigidity, hardness and processing fluidity, but also has high toughness characteristics, which help it to be injected easily, extruded or heated forming.


PVC: Commonly known as polyvinyl chloride, mainly used for edge sealing and insertion conditions. It is suitable for extrusion molding. PVC material is a non-combustible material, and the stability of processing and molding temperature is poor, especially the stability 

of color is not good. PVC was once the largest general-purpose plastic in the world, and it is widely used. It is widely used in building materials, industrial products, daily necessities, floor leather, floor tiles, artificial leather, pipes, wires and cables, packaging films, bottles, foam materials, sealing materials, fibers, etc. PVC material is easy to burn, there is thick black smoke when burning, which affects the smell, no sticky filament, and the appearance after burning is black toner.

PU: PU is an elastic body between plastic and rubber. Its excellent comprehensive performance is not available in ordinary plastic and rubber. PU castors are widely used in medical industry, food processing industry, office, factory handling, warehousing and logistics, machinery manufacturing, etc. The operating temperature range is between -35 and 80 °C. Features: (1) The elastomer of the PU wheel has good properties such as wear resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, low pressure resistance, tear resistance, radiation resistance, high load bearing and shock absorption; (2) The PU wheel 


has excellent sound-absorbing properties, and the wheels No noise is generated during exercise, which can achieve a mute effect. PU material is easy to burn, there is light white smoke when burning, easy to dissolve, no influence on odor, sticky filament.

POM: Mainly used for wear-resistant parts such as foot pads, castors, door hinges etc. The performance is wear-resistant and pressure-resistant, but the dimensional stability is poor. POM is a high-density, high-crystallinity thermoplastic engineering plastic. The degree of polymerization is not high, and it is easily depolymerized by heat. It can be used as a raw material for organic chemicals and synthetic resins, and also as a pharmaceutical fumigant. But it has good physical, mechanical and chemical properties, especially excellent friction resistance.

PA: Commonly called nylon. Mainly used as foot pads, five-star claws, castors and other places with high wear resistance and high life expectancy. PA castors are widely used in factory handling, warehousing and logistics, equipment manufacturing and other industries. The operating temperature range is between -35 and 100 °C. High temperature nylon castors can be used in a high temperature environment of 250 °C. Features of PA: (1) High mechanical properties, good toughness, high tensile and compressive strength; (2) Strong absorption capacity for impact and stress vibration, and the 


impact strength is higher than that of ordinary plastics; (3) High softening point, heat-resistant, can be used for a long time at 150 °C. The high temperature nylon castors reinforced by glass fiber, whose heat deformation temperature can reach more than 250 °C; (4) The surface is smooth, the friction coefficient is small, and wear-resistant; (5) Corrosion resistance, very good Alkali and most salt solutions, weak acid, engine oil, gasoline, but not strong acid and oxidant; (6) Self-extinguishing, non-toxic, odorless, good weather resistance, inert to biological erosion, good antibacterial, mildew resistance. PA material is not easy to burn, which has the smell of burning hair when burning, and the appearance is bubbly and sticky after burning.

PMMA: plexiglass (commonly known as acrylic). There are five kinds of transparent materials in plastic, and PMMA is one of the most transparent materials. The workpiece has an acetic acid smell when it is cut. It can be shaped and bent by soaking in boiling water. Meanwhile, its surface is easy to scratch, the hardness is low, and it is easy to crack when bending, and the price is more than 20% higher than ABS.

PC: commonly known as polycarbonate. It is also a transparent material, with advantages of high surface hardness, scratch resistance, strong impact resistance, high strength and good weather resistance (that is, not afraid of sunlight). But the price is high, about 40% higher than PMMA.
